The Tragedy of Xiao Heping.

The Journal of Dennis is a project I work on from time to time when I can. It follows the tale of a young Ninja warrior from Greenland and ties a lot of different mythologies and histories together. I enjoy it all too much sometimes. However this picture was a sad one. It depicts the outcome of our hero's decisions when he becomes too prideful and forgets who he is. It is the story of Xiao Heping, the tragedy of an innocent village.

The Epic Struggle

I drew this at Wild Wings Cafe while sitting across from Quinton shortly before going to the arcade and having an awesome night! This is the name sake of my blog and personal comic Squid vs Rocket. It is the single greatest idea to have ever been generated my my frontal lobes and then interpreted onto paper. I was personally satisfied with this one for many reasons. One however is how I finally understood how to make smoke from a rocket look awesome. I've never been very good with shading in smoke and now I understand it a little better. Oh, how I love Squid vs. Rocket. There isn't a better idea that exists.
Okay well, maybe Batman.

Something to hold you over.

I had drawn this in Quinton's sketchbook. I had then proceeded to naturally forget about it until I found his sketchbook today and see it. I really must say I like this drawing a lot.

I feel like her face allures to a greater past from which she springs. Also her love for her newly found culture has her showing off her scars rather than repair or hide them despite the technology she has readily available in the Star Wars universe which I created her in. This was to help satisfy my nerdisms of creating a story in the Star Wars universe...yeah Star Wars is awesome. Even though I feel it has yet to even scratch the incredible depth of creativity that it can motor. The amounts of cultures and people are literally countless and we have yet to see much of any of them. I'd like to expand on the Wookie culture. I feel like it'd be reminiscent to old Scottish traditions and African tribes.

Dancing with myself!

So again I'm trying to break into a habit to post drawings up. So here's another.
As I was getting ready one day to draw a comic I needed a good warm-up sketch. I didn't have any ideas so I decided to ask Aja. She gave me a terrible answer until I gave her a push in the right direction and she wanted a picture of her dancing in a sundress and cowboy boots. So a piece of paper, a pencil and a couple of google searches on sundresses and cowboy boots later I had the makings of this picture. Surprisingly this became more than a sketch and became a challenge. This one definitely had me reaching out of my comfort zone of warriors beating the snot out of each other. The pose alone took me a while just to get in my head not to mention how long it took to make look natural. In the end it was a good time, no alcohol required. I also learned quite a bit while drawing it too!

Mmm....I got nothing.

No excuse this time. I just fail at keeping a good schedule in almost everything...even sleeping, and I love sleeping. Anyway I'm here to attempt a break in the bad habit chain and slove this problem.

 Slove (slōv): verb

1  To come to a conclusion quickly and precisely, usually involving cutting a knife or blade.
"Wow, Mark we really need to slove this problem!"

So here we have a redesign of a character I have yet to pitch to my editor and writer of a character in our upcoming webcomic. I took the liberty or redesigning all three characters in attempt to simplify the process thus increasing speed and production efficiency. I honestly really enjoyed this (and the other sketches along with it) a bit too much. Which is how we want it. This alone, with color took significantly less time than even one previous panels and only their pencils. I'm happy with this outcome and hopefully my friends will be too.
